Mapping our Data Bodies with MOCA Toronto

From the apps we use on our devices to the surveillance systems on city streets, we live in a datafied world, in which information about us is being collected on a daily basis. In this workshop, we will navigate the impact of datafication to form a better understanding of our “data bodies” and how they are used, stored and shared by governments and corporations.

Imagining Feminist Interfaces

Imagining Feminist Interfaces

What does it mean to imagine a feminist digital voice interface? Through a series of speculative design exercises, we will prototype and discuss what voice technologies might look like if we designed them in line with the central commitments of feminism: participation, agency, embodiment, equity, empowerment, plurality and justice. Participants will learn the basics of designing a conversational UI but no prior coding skills are needed.

This is presented in partnership with Digital Justice Lab and Trinity Square Video.

tendernet is a collective of female-identifying technologists, writers, educators, designers and activists whose work explores speculative design, networked devices and privacy through an intersectional feminist framework. Most recently, the collective has led workshops aimed at developing radical feminist interventions to emerging technologies, with a focus on voice interfaces. Becca Ricks and Zoe Bachman are co-founders of tendernet. tendernet.us

The Digital Justice Lab’s (DJL) mission is to focus on building a more just and equitable digital future. Working alongside technologists, community activists and policymakers, DJL helps shape a better public understanding of technology and its impact on communities across the country. Through capacity building, public engagement and continuous collaboration, DJL supports diverse communities in making informed decisions around digital issues. Digital Justice Lab is a project of Tides Canada, a registered Canadian charity dedicated to providing uncommon solutions for the common good.

We recommend that workshop participants bring a laptop.

This workshop is part of a series of workshops presented in partnership with Digital Justice Lab for Age of You.

Alternative Urban Futures Evening Talk Series

Alternative Urban Futures Evening Talk December 3rd 2018

Welcome to the Alternative Urban Futures Event Talk Series. December 3rd is the first night of hopefully many nights of exploring our urban futures. As we navigate towards “smart” cities, and more “connected” communities how do we explore what we should be worried about, what the possibilities are and how we can build towards a more just and equitable future?

This evening will be an opportunity to explore the various themes that build and connect the urban areas we currently live in, from labour to community power. We will be talking not only about Toronto but other urban areas in the country we now know as Canada. We will be working together to build knowledge, share resources and navigate the options.

It will be a jam packed event that will start with a panel of amazing black and indigenous young folks navigating what the future can hold.

The series of talks will include 7 mins presentations and 20 mins in-conversation opportunities for the audience to participate in. There will be a reading list connected to each talk that will be shared after the event.

Speakers:

Molly Sauter

Sefanit Habtom

Design Jam : Data Edition

We are hosting a design jam November 14th from 6pm-8:30pm at the Toronto Media Arts Centre.

During this design jam we will be building out a collective zine or multiple zines around the theme of “What is Data”. We will be exploring collectively how we define different forms of data and build narratives and illustrations around it.

For example

  • How do we define personal data?

  • What are the stories we can tell about the different points of data we interact with daily?

Don’t have experience in the tech space? No worries!

This is a space for artists, technologists, anybody who is interested in building public education materials to come together.

All of the content that is built during this time will be be shared with the broader public.

Data Trust 101 Series Day + Night

Data Trust 101 Series Day + Night

Data - and many different types of it - has become the focus of urgent policy discussions this past year, from the municipal to the federal level and particularly in the smart city context. Who controls it? Who can use it? Under what terms? How do we leverage data as a public good? How do we manage aggregate data? How are we going to manage our public data as an economic asset? How are we to assert our digital rights as the residents of a smart city?

One proposed approach to address some of these issues is through the creation and use of data trusts. So what is a data trust? That's what we're going to talk about. Tech Reset Canada, Digital Justice Lab, and Centre for Digital Rights are extremely happy to be hosting Sean McDonald, Co-founder of Digital Public, and a long-time advocate of data trusts, to help us do that. We'll talk about what exactly a data trust is, what it isn't, and why we might want to use them to manage our data in a range of situations. We'll do this in a conversational format with me, Bianca of Tech Reset Canada, asking some questions and moderating our full room discussion.

You don't need to know anything at all about the idea of data trusts to join us. Zero. This is a very introductory session to begin to explain the idea. We'll leave lots and lots of time for Q&A to make this a really open and interactive session. We'll have snacks and subway tokens. If you have any questions at all please send me a note at bianca at techresetcanada dot org.

More on Sean here:

Sean McDonald builds governance for technology and technology for governance. Sean is the co-founder of Digital Public, which uses trusts to help communities protect and govern digital assets. He is a lawyer and the CEO of FrontlineSMS, an award-winning global technology company. Sean is a Visiting Fellow at Stanford’s Digital Civil Society Lab, and a former Affiliate at Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center.

Sean is an advisor to Digital Democracy, the IEEE's Ethics and AI Committee, and a member of ICANN'S Rights Protection Mechanism Group. He is a researcher and writer whose work has been published by the Review of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Stanford Social Innovation Review, Cornell’s Legal Informatics Institute, the Center for Internet and Society, and Innovations Journal, among others. He holds a JD/MA from American University, with specializations in international law and alternative dispute resolution.
